A Love Affair with Kogi Tacos

While the rest of America was grappling with the national healthcare debate, Billy and Jen were coaxing a relationship during the culinary "gourmet food truck" revolution that exploded in Los Angeles at the end of 2009.  (See http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/food/10-of-the-remarkable-food-trucks-taking-over-the-u-s-2392644#photoViewer=1 and http://uk.lifestyle.yahoo.com/food-drink/gourmet-taco-truck-invasion-article-huib.html)  For many, including Jen and BIlly there really are few things better in LA than a Kogi taco!  (http://kogibbq.com/)  Regardless of time or location, these babies are GOOD!

Jennifer's first introduction to Kogi was at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010--the night that Billy planned an "LA Experience" for her 38th birthday.  (Yes, for those of you keeping track, this was BEFORE we started dating.)  After seeing "The Blind Side," the pair headed to Santa Monica only to learn that the gathering site of food trucks had moved to another part of town.  When they hit Abbott Kinney, the sight was amazing--there were about 10-12 different food trucks parked along two blocks with about 6 more in the parking lot of the Brig (a local watering hole). Hundreds of people were wandering the streets window shopping and moving in and out of the local hot spots while enjoying the eats at the food trucks.

While the other trucks had 2-6 people stragglers each, Kogi had about 45-50 loyal fans waiting patiently in line. To kill time, Jen and Billy tested two tacos from the Border Grill truck that were novel but not exactly inspiring. After 30 minutes in line, Jennifer learned why these babies were worth every minute of the wait--why Billy was so animated and effusive in singing their praises.

Whether your choice is short rib (Billy's #1; Jen's #2), spicy pork (Billy's #2), or chicken (Jen's #1), the kimchi-topped goodness is a flavor-packed treat. (For the record, neither like kimchi in any other form.) To quote chef Roy Choi from the Kogi website, these deceptive little tacos capture "The “holy moly! what the hell did I just eat?” sensation. These bad boys started it all....These suckers are delicious and are the reason why people keep coming back. All we do is take the flavors of Korean barbeque and mix it up with the flavor of our esses, and there you have our Korean taco."  After this introduction, Jen was sold...on the tacos...it'd take a few more months to be sold on Billy.

Nonetheless, Kogi tacos were there on the night that sealed the deal.

Easter weekend 2010, Jen was craving Kogi so she checked out online where the Kogi trucks were going to that night.  To her delight and surprise, one of the trucks was going to station itself at the Yogurtland on LaBrea @ Third Street - just up the street from her house.  So, Jen texted Billy to see if he wanted to grab a few tacos and yogurt that night.  Billy was in Pasadena working on an all-day handyman project for a friend.  Kogi seemed the right night cap to a long day of work. Jen sent a text to a few other friends to join them. They all "declined the offer" because they were out of town for Easter.

To this day, Billy doubts that any other texts were sent. He thinks the grand planner--Jennifer--had hatched a plan and he walked into . . . but, we digress.

At 10 p.m., Billy showed up at Jen's house and off they went to La Brea and Third.  Conversation flowed particularly easily that night; and, as they sat on the curb eating their tasty tacos, it seemed like another fun friendly evening.

Billy joked in jest about Jen's past spurning of his overtures and how he felt at ease that night, as friends, because he knew that she would never seriously consider his offer. To his surprise, Jen laughed but did not explicitly state that she intended to continue to resist.

Suddenly, Billy realized that unexpected possibility (after 6 months of "no's" and "nay's") that the red light had turned green.  For the first time, Jen was open to the idea of dating him!! When Billy vocalized his epiphany that Jen was ready to date, she responded "maybe." Suddenly, the "sexual tension" that Billy had joked about that evening became palpable. The two began dancing around the unspoken, but obvious, mutual attraction. While keeping appearances that this was just another casual evening together, the dance circle grew tighter.

Not yet ready to part each other's company, what with all these new possibilities in the air, they picked up some yogurt from Yogurtland and drove off to see the sights in LA.  At her request, the car wandered up to Mulholland Drive because Jen had never driven the loop or seen the view from the various makeout points. BUT, NOTHING HAPPENED. . . yet.

Wandering down off the Hollywood Hills, the two found themselves at the office building where Billy works--just above Hollywood and Highland. Billy showed Jen the spectacular view of Hollywood and LA from the roof before adjourning to the glass-walled conference room that looks out on the Hollywood sign.

Conversation never skipped a beat that night. Both were quick on their feet, trading barbs and flirtatious overtures with skill and ease.  Finally realizing that the time was right, Billy leaned in and asked Jen (nose-to-nose) what she would do if he kissed her; and, she replied, "I'd let you."  Mesmerized by the Hollywood lights, weakened by the effects of Kogi tacos and Yogurtland, and worn down by his persistence, Jen surrendered to Billy's first kiss after months of steadfast abstinence.  Finding that first kiss to be not all bad, there was a second, a third . . . .

So, thanks, in part, to those tasty Kogi taco treats, Jen and Billy shared their first kiss and began a dating adventure that has them headed to the temple in less than 3 weeks!

We recommend that you try those enchanting Kogi tacos...you might just like them.  And, if you are single, perhaps those babies will bring you the same dating luck they've brought to Jen and Billy!

500 Days of Summer

This is the film that changed it all...well, not really...more like this is the film that solidified our friendship.

Billy first saw this movie at an advance screening on the Fox lot with a blog writer/friend who was personal friends with the screenwriter and his ex that inspired the movie. When the lights came up, Billy's first thought was that he needed to see it again with his friends Roz and Jen so that he could get their individual female perspective/reaction to the movie. Billy knew that a dinner conversation with these two women would make for a VERY DELIGHTFUL evening.

So approximately four weeks later, after Jen and Roz had seen the movie, the three met up at Maggiano's Little Italy restaurant in The Grove shopping center. Needless to say, the conversation was long (3-4 hours), full of laughs and insights with some twists and turns. Jen and Roz were pretty matter of fact about their views on the subject of relationships. Billy was surprised to hear a fresh perspective from two women who possessed both strong personalities, a healthy dose of self-awareness, and a certain decisiveness about how they conducted their lives while at the same time preserving a degree of vulnerability and openness. It was a fresh taste of lamb that made this lion (Billy) hungry for more.

After wiping the drool off his chin, Billy decided that he was right in anticipating a lively conversation, but completely underestimated the depth of his female company. They sort of floated up to the top of his list of most impressive women he knew. This experience put Jen on a pedastal from which, to this day, he refuses to take her down. To this day, this movie remains one of our favorites!

The Wedding Colors: Purple

When it was decided that we would be getting married in December, Jen knew that she did not want a Christmas-themed wedding with the traditional red flowers, etc.  So, she went looking for ideas.  She didn't have to look too far (thanks to her childhood and photographer friend Alicia Dickerson whose blog she stalks) before she found a bouquet of flowers in purple with which she fell in love...and, that was it...end of story...the color for our wedding is purple.

Jen's Life in LA

Having grown up in Northern California, Jen never wanted to live in LA.  While she hated her job, she loved the seasons, activities, and opportunities that Northern California afforded her.  Despite her best intentions and attempts to stay in Northern California FOREVER, in September 2006, Jen moved to LA to join her friends who had started a new law firm--Fagen Friedman and Fulfrost LLP.

Jen found a great place to live--the bottom half of a duplex built in 1929 with a landlord named Billie who was 94, lived upstairs, drove her full-sized caddy, and had a collection of wigs, jewelry, and bedazzled clothing that would make anyone jealous!  The place was known throughout the neighborhood for its turquoise exterior.  It's in a great neighborhood and is only 10 minutes (on a bad day) from work without any time on a freeway.

Jen's job has kept her busy, but not quite as busy as when she lived in Northern California--THANKFULLY!  She loves working with the people in her office and has some great clients!  She still works with one school district in the Bay Area and travels north frequently to work with them.

Jen has also kept busy at church.  For the past 2 1/2 years she has worked with the young women ages 12-18, planning weekly activities and overseeing Sunday lessons.  They are amazing girls of multiple races and nationalities as well as vastly varied family home lives.  (This photo at Disneyland was only possible because of the Give-a-Day-Get-a-Day promotion Disneyland ran this year; otherwise, the girls would not have been able to afford to go.  It was quite the day!)

Living in an urban center like Los Angeles has given Jennifer the opportunity for star sightings, plenty of theatre and movie-going experiences, and eye-opening culture.  She has found that the traffic is actually better than the traffic in the Bay Area.  And, much to her surprise, LA has become her home.

Why I Love Jen

As my family can attest to, from the age of 13, the idea and sensory/emotional perception of my significant other/soul mate (depending on your romantic bend) has been an on-going fascination and relentless pursuit. My life has been colored in beautiful ways by my romantic and platonic relationships, but none of them have been what I was looking for.

My family and friends insisted for years that I was being "TOO" picky.  I wanted too much, they would say. But I was tormented with an "inquietud" (Spanish for "restlessness," "vexation") that kept me moving from one relationship to another. Over time, I came to realize that I was not looking for a particular type, quality or personality; I was looking for a certain "blend" of woman--an individual female who possessed a balance of qualities that engaged, challenged and pacified me.

THEN I MET JEN.

As friends, I admired her intelligence and her strength of personality because they revealed to me that she possessed a beautiful blend of emotional vulnerability and a strong self confidence about who she is. We had, and continue to have, long and engaging conversations. To me, those conversations revealed the depth of her compassion and intelligence. Our friendly encounters made it obvious that this was a unique woman with a blend of qualities that was the elixir that I was looking for.

While dating, I had the opportunity to go through her photo albums and see her in various social settings. I was, and remain, enchanted with her joyful girlish exuberance contained inside a very mature woman who has made her own place in the world. I see the same smile in her high school photos as in our engagement photos. (It is now my daily endeavor to keep her smiling.) I became moved by my daily contact with this creature who could be playful and sweet as well as practical and organized. She was equally comfortable and happy eating Kogi tacos on La Brea @ midnight as she was going to the opera.

I fell in love and proposed to Jennifer because I have never received such deep and profound romantic love from one woman. I am humbled to have a special place in her heart. And she still has room to care and feel for so many others. But I am not just twitterpated because she loves me and I love her. I trust her judgment. I have found a fellow Rockerfeller Republican with whom I can people-watch and talk, and talk, and talk for hours on end.

Whether we are cuddled up talking with our noses inches apart or at different ends of the state, Jennifer is very much a part of who I am. She permeates my thoughts. She colors my views. Her voice is in my mind. In a sense, our approaching wedding is a ceremony to formalize a profound union that has already occurred in the past 8 months.

Marriage is an essential life experience that we have both sought our entire lives. I'm just VERY FORTUNATE to come to that moment where the reality is equal to the expectation I had when I was just a kid, and then some.

In the Beginning...

...Billy and Jennifer first met when they attended BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School.  In a class of 150, both were among the few singles and non-traditional students returning to school from the workforce.  During law school, Billy was busy entertaining people while building the Sports & Entertainment Law Society and putting on the first Undergraduate Diversity Fair for the law school. Jennifer tutored elementary school students and struggling law students and organized charity auctions and gift drives.  Their paths occasionally crossed in the library and hallway between classes; and, they attended the same Contracts and Advanced Appellate Brief Writing classes, but alas no sparks.  Their first year, Billy gave Jennifer a red balloon on Valentine's Day . . . along with the other 6-8 single female friends he had in law school.  Both graduated in April 2003 and went their merry separate ways...Billy to pursue entertainment dreams in Los Angeles and Jennifer to defend public education in the San Francisco Bay Area.
